Sublette Co., WY

As promised, a few images from around Sublette County.  These are from Big Piney and Daniel – there a ton of great signs and things in Pinedale but I took the rare alone time as a good opportunity to eat ice cream, read, and drink a latte.  It was heavenly. Have a great weekend and…

Kris - Is it a ghost town, or is there an ice cream stand there?

em - i love the clouds/darkening sky in the background of the red cabin.

katy - Daniel is just a very small town – population around 100. But it’s been around for a long time, so there are some neat old buildings and stuff. Big Piney is closer to 1500 people and has an awesome mexican restaurant. :)

Doreen Kline - Katy,
Love the photos. You captured the spirit of the town. Great texture in all of the buildings.

cattle branding at Miller’s Land & Livestock

As promised, some more images from the cattle branding I shot last week.   PLEASE BE AWARE – there are shots of cows being branded.  While this does not involve any blood there is a lot of smoke from the burning hair and may gross some people out.  If you think it might offend you, please…

John Shim - Who knew branding could look so glamorous?! ;)

Kris - I like these as a collection; a record of the day. There are some that are real classics: The old cowboy with the mudflap girl on his hat, and the boot in the stirrup are two of my favorites. I’ll bet the Millers like them!

katy - Ah right…the dust, the blood, the burning hair…it’s old Hollywood all the way!!

Really though, it was an fantastic experience and I’m so glad I got to do it. The Millers and the ranch hands were all awesome!

em - Excellent. Love them.

Dick - What a great shoot! My fave is the fisheye of the cows in the pen but I really like a lot of them.

miller’s land and livestock sneak peek

Yesterday I spent the day down in Big Piney and Pinedale taking pictures of cattle branding at Miller’s Land & Livestock.  Here are a few of my early favorites – I haven’t had time to go through them all yet but I wanted to share these.  Warning – the last shot shows a hot brand…

Kris - Real cowboys doing real stuff. Really good. Looking forward to seeing the rest.

Dick - I know it seems brutal but if I was a cow I’d rather get branded once and then live free range than live in a building with the lights on 24/7 being force fed whatever will make me gain weight the fastest. Branding aside these cows are in a good place.

katy - I agree, Dad – these cows have it WAY better than most of the cattle in the world.

em - ok, the vegetarian in me didn’t really know if i wanted to see these pics, but i totally agree with your dad: better to have a sore butt for awhile and have a free life than factory farmed. and those photos are amazing. real-life cowboys at work.

katy - Thanks so much Em! It was really a great experience and I’m excited to do a full post – I got lots of great stuff!

Brandon- Anchorage, Alaska - That looks like a hard life for the cows and the cowboys. Great job documenting it!
